Caldaro
Caldaro - Villages and wineyards
The “strada del vino” is a “county” road that stretches from Bolzano to Termeno passing the marvellous vine-making villages of St Michael, St. Paul, Caldaro, Cornaiano, Cortaccia.
The centres of the villages are well preserved and as well the surroundings are full of ancient manors, castles and large farmhouses.
Lovers of rustical food find plenty of choice there, those who like wine can stock up supplies with local wine from the many producers or visit the show room Winecenter in Caldaro for a tasting session.
Yet another attraction is the Mendola funicular, a standing cable car that dates back to 1903. Most people know those sort of transportation system from town like Budapest, but this one is way out of scale: 4,5 kilometres of tracks, 64% its maximum steepness, 850 meters of altitude covered in 12 minutes and a literally breathtaking view over the valley, Caldaro and the lakes.
Ramblers will find plenty o excursions here too, wether it is on top of the Mendola pass, or down in the surroundings of Caldaro, like the trails to the ice holes, the Rastenbach gorge or the mighty fortress Hocheppan.
